Dr. Jorge Guerrero, Peruvian veterinarian who lives in Pennington, NJ, will receive the Medal of Merit 2016 of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA). The award ceremony will be held at the WSAVA World Congress 2016, taking place September 27-30 in Cartagena, Colombia.

Dr. Jorge Guerrero graduated from veterinary doctor at the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru, then earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Immunology and Parasitology at the University of Illinois, USA He spent almost 30 years working in the pharmaceutical industry, especially with MSD, where he was part of the team that developed and introduced ivermectin around the world. His last position in the industry was the Executive Director of Veterinary Services Professionals for operations North of Merial, Inc. In 2005 America, was awarded the Award Parasitologist Veterinary Distinguished American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists, and in 2007 , he became the first Latin American president of the Veterinary Community of North America (NAVC).
He is Associate Professor of Veterinary Parasitology in the Department of Pathobiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania;Charter Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology (Parasitology) and the European College of Veterinary Parasitology (retired) (a reserved only for the most distinguished and experienced in the discipline members honor). He was recently named Honorary Member of the American Society for Heart Filariasis where he served for many years as Chairman of its Scientific Committee.
Very passionate about veterinary education, Dr. Guerrero was the visionary who in 2005 developed, founded and still chairs the Latin American Veterinary Conference (LAVC) in Lima, Peru and is a former founder member of the Southern European Veterinary directory Conference (SEVC) in Barcelona, Spain.
Commenting on the award presentation, Dr. Colin Burrows WSAVA President said: “Dr. Guerrero has done it all. He has served and represented our profession with distinction, he has taught more than one generation of students of veterinary medicine, has helped to educate their medical colleagues veterinarians on three continents and alone, almost single-handedly developed and established the LAVC, an important and major conference continuing education in veterinary medicine in a relatively marginalized of Latin America region. This is the true service to our profession and Dr. Guerrero is a worthy winner of this year WSAVA Meritorious Service “.
