The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) was named Animal Health Organization of the Year at the Pet Hero Awards 6th Anniversary Ceremony at Gotham Hall.

The Pet Philanthropy Circle Pet Hero Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the health and welfare of animals. AVMA President Dr. John de Jong accepted the award on behalf of the association’s more than 91,000 members.

“Providing much needed regular, affordable care to animals of all species is part of every veterinarian’s DNA,” Dr. de Jong said. “The AVMA is committed to providing veterinarians with the resources needed to use their skills to save and enhance the quality of animal lives. Organizations such as the Pet Philanthropy Circle and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation’s Veterinary Care Charitable Fund help us realize this goal.”

Jewel Morris, chief executive officer and founder of the Pet Philanthropy Circle, presented the award alongside the honorary chair, country singer Naomi Judd, and broadcaster David Frei.

“By celebrating individuals, associations, professionals and businesses that that are committed to improving and protecting animal lives, we hope to inspire others,” Morris said.

Other 2018 winners included: Zoetis, as corporation of the year, and the Irwin family—Terri, Bindi and Robert—as the Inaugural Humanitarian Family of the Year Award.

Dr. de Jong commented on how veterinary medicine is so much more than most people realize.

“Veterinarians touch people’s lives every day, whether or not they have a pet,” Dr. de Jong said. “Veterinarians serve at the critical intersection of human and animal health known as ‘One Health.’ They are responsible for breakthroughs in research benefiting both people and animals, public health, food safety and so much more.”
