Now more than ever shelters need help feeding the animals in need. The American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, announced June 2 that the Animal Rescue League of Boston, received a grant from American Humane’s Feed the Hungry fund. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) is an unwavering champion for animals in need, committed to keeping them safe and healthy in habitats and homes.
Otra Mas, A Horse Rescue and Equine Therapy Organization, also received a grant from American Humane’s Feed the Hungry fund. Located in San Juan Capistrano, California, Otra Mas adopts rescued and retired performance horses, rehabilitates them and retrains them to be partners with humans in its Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) programs.
At least once a week, Otra Mas gets a call about a horse in need. Often, they are performance horses or working horses who can no longer perform due to age or injury. Otra Mas was founded out of the need for a place that could take these aging, injured or abandoned horses in, rehabilitate them and retrain them for a new life’s purpose. Once given the opportunity to transition and heal, the horses who come to Otra Mas become therapy horses in the EAT and EAP programs. In their new roles, these horses are given the chance to be happy, useful and well cared for while having a meaningful “second life” giving back to the community. With a new home on a six-acre ranch, a new horse and human herd to interact with daily, superior care and a new career, Otra Mas gives horses a second chance at life and, for most, their final chance. The Feed the Hungry fund will allow the team at Otra Mas to continue to feed and care for the horses.
“The very sad reality for shelters and rescue organizations today is that they are struggling to keep kibble in food bowls and litter in boxes,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane. “We must take action to ensure organizations that are housing animals left by the wayside during this sweeping pandemic have the basic resources needed to ensure the safe and humane treatment of animals in their care. To stand by and do nothing during this time is unconscionable.”

For 120 years, the ARL has responded to the needs of animals and the people who care about them. With over 700 dedicated volunteers and 100 staff members, the ARL lends unwavering support to local animals, families and neighborhoods. The team provides outstanding veterinary care, adoption, and field services, while also confronting the root causes of animal cruelty and neglect through special police investigation and advocacy aimed at strengthening the laws that protect animals. In 2019, the shelter served more than 20,000 animals in need. Today, they increasingly focus on prevention and keeping animals out of shelters and in the communities where they belong. The Feed the Hungry fund will allow the ARL to supply critical food and supplies to the community during these trying times, helping to keep pets with their families, in neighborhoods where the impact of the pandemic is great.
