In this issue of, we recognize Matilda the Algonquin Cat of the famous Algonquin Hotel in New York City. The Algonquin Hotel is a well known landmark to most New Yorkers and especially to writers. As a New Yorker myself, I was pleased to learn about Matilda and discover the rich history and tradition behind the Algonquin Cat.

Matilda, the reigning Algonquin Cat inspires special hotel deals like “Friends of Matilda,” where pet lovers can receive 20 percent off of the hotel’s best available rate. Matilda has also inspired the Algonquin Loves Pets Program where pet owners are welcome to bring their furry friend along. The Morris Animal Foundation continues their Happy Healthy Cat Campaign with their latest initiative Helping Shelters Help Cats. This effort aims to raise pet-owner awareness of feline health issues and increase funding for research and scientist training. MAF is also a sponsor of the CATalyst Council, a coalition of the veterinary community, academia, organizations and nonprofits to champion the cat (
