WVA’s World Veterinary Day 2026 – Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health

The world is celebrating veterinarians today with the World Veterinary Association (WVA) theme: “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health.” Selected by the WVA Council, the 2026 theme highlights the critical and systemic role veterinarians play in safeguarding food safety, food security, public health, and animal health worldwide. From farm to fork, veterinarians are on the frontline of ensuring that food of animal origin is safe, nutritious, and responsibly produced.

The day is being celebrated on the last day of the World Veterinary Association (WVA) Congress taking place in Tokyo, Japan. The annual Congress brings together veterinary professionals, scientists, and stakeholders from around the world in a landmark global gathering dedicated to advancing animal health, welfare, public health, and sustainability through the One Health approach.

This year’s Congress is marked by the distinguished presence of members of the Japanese Imperial Family, highlighting the high-level recognition of veterinary medicine and its essential contribution to society, global health, and sustainable development.

Beyond clinical practice, veterinary services underpin sustainable food systems, prevent and control zoonotic diseases, combat antimicrobial resistance, and contribute to global health security. In an increasingly interconnected world—where emerging diseases, climate pressures, and economic volatility challenge food systems—veterinarians serve as essential actors in strengthening resilience and sustainability.

World Veterinary Day 2026 aims to elevate public awareness and policy recognition of veterinary services as a cornerstone of secure and sustainable food systems. By reinforcing the link between animal health, food production, and human wellbeing, the theme underscores the indispensable contribution of the veterinary profession to global stability and health.

The WVA Council selected the theme “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health” to highlight the systemic role of veterinary services in safeguarding food safety, food security, public health, and animal health worldwide. From farm to fork, veterinarians are at the frontline of ensuring that food of animal origin is safe, nutritious, and responsibly produced. Their work protects consumers, supports sustainable food systems, prevents zoonotic diseases, and strengthens global health security.

The 2026 theme recognizes that global food systems are increasingly interconnected and exposed to emerging disease threats, climate-related pressures, antimicrobial resistance, and economic volatility. In this context, veterinarians act not only as animal health professionals but as essential actors in health security, sustainable food systems, and economic resilience/sustainability.

To support celebrations worldwide, the WVA developed a comprehensive toolkit providing key messages, communication materials, and activity ideas for veterinary associations, institutions, and professionals to promote the theme and engage their communities.

World Veterinary Day Award

WVA will also celebrate with the World Veterinary Day Award, which recognizes outstanding campaigns developed by WVA members under the annual WVD theme. The Award celebrates innovation, impact, and commitment in raising awareness of the veterinary profession’s vital contributions. The World Veterinary Day Award is sponsored by HealthforAnimals. Further information on participation and award applications is available through WVA member channels.
