Synthetic Pheromones Alleviate Pet Behavior Issues

May 3, 2013 " Lenexa, Kan. " When it comes to solving behavior issues, Ceva Animal Health has developed familiar formulas that work to solve behavior problems in dogs and cats. Ceva’s products contain synthetic pheromones that mimic natural pheromones in dogs and cats. These pheromones provide pets with reassurance and a sense of well-being.

Adaptil® is available for dogs. Adaptil uses a synthetic product that mimics the properties of the natural pheromones of the lactating female. Available in a collar form (including a Braille collar and packaging to help the visually impaired), electric diffuser or spray, these appeasing pheromones enable puppies and adult dogs to better handle stressful situations and adapt to new situations and environments such as:

  • Separation anxiety: physical separation from the owner to whom it is attached.
  • New people/things: moving or major changes in the household, remodeling or redecorating, new pieces of furniture.
  • Fear/phobias: thunderstorms, lightning, fireworks.
  • Temporary changes: being transported, hospitalized or boarded.

Cat owners can use Feliway® to address a number of behavioral issues. Feliway® is a synthetic copy of the feline facial pheromone, used by cats to mark their territory as safe and secure. By mimicking the cat’s natural facial pheromones, Feliway® creates a state of familiarity and security in the cat’s local environment.

Offered in two convenient forms, electronic diffuser and spray, Feliway® can be used to help comfort and reassure cats while they cope with a challenging situation and help prevent or reduce the stress caused by a change in their environment. It reduces or eliminates several behaviors, including:

  • Urine marking
  • Anxiety related aggression
  • Stress reduction at the veterinarian, groomer, kennel or while traveling
  • Scratching on vertical surfaces

Pet owners can purchase Adaptil® and Feliway® through their veterinarian. This is part of Ceva’s commitment that pet owners receive the critical care and advice of trained professionals.

“Veterinarians are on the front line of providing the right care to build and ensure the remarkable bond between pets and people,” said Elizabeth Hodgkins, DVM, Esq., Director, Veterinary Services, Ceva Animal Health. “Pet owners typically look to veterinarians to provide medical care but they offer so much more. Veterinarians can help pet owners find the right solutions to address behavioral issues, too,” Hodgkins noted.

Ceva Animal Health has partnered with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists to launch the Keep the L.O.V.E. Alive Behavior Express Tour 2013 campaign. The nine-city tour is focused on raising awareness that there are solutions to behavioral issues for their beloved dogs and cats. The L.O.V.E. stands for Lean on Veterinarian Expertise to provide medically sound treatment options for behavioral and health issues so owners can keep the love alive for their pets.
