Make it a Green Christmas: Eco Friendly Gifts for Pets

Don’t leave your pet behind this Christmas when following the “green” trend. You know they expect something in their stocking, so we took this opportunity to help make your choices earth-friendly.

Not only do these products contribute to a healthier planet by using recycled materials, but the companies that make them are environmentally responsible and committed to sustainable practices. You won’t believe the creative items we found that, contrary to Kermit the Frog’s line, make it easy being green.

Pet Beds
If your pet needs a new bed this year, check out West Paw Design. This company diverts more than 25 tons of plastic bottles from landfills every year by filling its pet beds with recycled soda pop bottles. The “bumper” beds use 100 percent organic cotton. World Wise also offers pet beds filled with a recycled fiber blend made from post consumer recycled plastic bottles.

Toys
At Planet Dog, all of its signature Orbee-Tuff® toys are 100 percent recyclable, but even better, you can purchase the recycled product in either bone or ball form. The toys are printed with the 100 percent recycled seal so it makes a great gift for an environmentally conscious dog owner.

Pet Collars
Using hemp products is a great way to support a crop that is grown pesticide free, limits deforestation, and is 100 percent biodegradable. It is also hypoallergenic. Earth Dog manufactures hemp collars, toys, beds and blankets for dogs. In addition, this small company in Tennessee fosters rescue dogs, drives a car fueled by vegetable oil and is carbon neutral.

Waste Bags
This could be a fun gag gift, but also a practical solution for the entire year. Dog waste is 100 percent biodegradable, but when put into plastic bags it can take more than 100 years to decompose. Bio Bag USA manufactures certified 100 percent biodegradable and 100 percent compostable bags made from a corn-based material. It also offers litter pan liners for cats. Using biodegradable bags can help divert all naturally biodegradable waste from entering landfills. You might also suggest this for your local dog park, as many have already wised up to using biodegradable options.

Cat Condos
Many people build their own cat climbing apparatuses out of recycled carpet and wood, but if you’re not the crafty type, check out the recyclable “cat trees” at Branch. These products are also made with a minimum of 35 percent recycled content and are visually appealing.
