Lorie Huston, DVM Bio

Working as a veterinarian, Lorie Huston developed a strong desire to help pet owners keep their pets healthy by educating them on the various health care strategies which can protect pets against infectious diseases, parasites, and other dangers.

Attending the University of Nebraska, Huston received a Bachelor of Science degree and then went on to attend the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1986.

She practiced at a busy urban veterinary hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, where she was employed since 1988 until her untimely passing on September 30, 2014. She worked primarily with dogs and cats.

Huston was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA), and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). She was the president of the Cat Writer’s Association (CWA) and a professional member of the Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) as well.

Huston had been writing online since 2001, when she first published The Pet Med Site.  She published her award winning blog, the Pet Health Care Gazette as well as at Feline Health Care Corner and Canine Health Care Corner. She is was also the National Pet Health Examiner at Examiner.com and she wrote a weekly cat column for The Daily Vet blog on PetMD.

Some of Huston’s previous writing positions included being the Feature Writer and Topic Editor in Pet Care at Suite101.com, a co-host for the popular podcast and review community Animal Cafe, the pet columnist and Animals topic editor at Untrained Housewife, a staff writer for Blissfully Domestic, a contributing writer for Veterinary Medicine for About.com, and the Pets Expert for Answers.com.

In addition, Huston published numerous articles both online and off. Some of the publications she had been featured in included FIDO Friendly, Pet Sitter’s World, Pet360.com and many others.

Huston also offered her services as a consultant at Social Media Savvy Pets. She served on the board of advisors for BlogPaws and offered assistance in social media and blogging at the CATalyst Council. Huston was also a founding member of the New Media Professional Association.
