Are more veterinarians talking to the public about cat care through social media? There’s at least one veterinarian who is trying to do more to reach the public this way. The Winn Feline Foundation proudly presented its Winn Feline Foundation Media Appreciation award to Dr. Lorie Huston at the BlogPaws 6th Annual Conference on Lake Las Vegas on May 16, 2014. The award was created to thank journalists who support and promote awareness of feline health. This was the first time the award was presented to a veterinarian and the first time it was presented at the BlogPaws conference.
Winn board Member Steve Dale, pet expert and certified dog and cat behavior consultant who presented the award, reports that communicating information to the general public regarding cat health and welfare, and supporting additional research is incredibly important.
“Dr. Huston has dedicated her career to helping companion animals and their families, and has been communicating her expertise to pet owners through her blogs,” Dale said. “The Winn Feline Foundation is so incredibly appreciative of her commitment to supporting research we fund to advance our knowledge of cat health.”
Huston is a certified veterinary journalist (CVJ) and the president of the Cat Writers’ Association. A veterinarian with over 20 years’ experience, Huston is the founder of the Pet-Health-Care-Gazette and works with the Canine Health Care Corner and Feline Health Corner. She writes a weekly cat column for The Daily Vet blog on PetMD and is the National Pet Health Examiner at Examiner.com.
“I am very passionate about doing everything I can to help keep our pets healthy and happy,” Huston said. “With six cats of my own, I have a special fondness for cats in general. I’m so pleased to be recognized for my contributions by the Winn Feline Foundation. They’ve done ‑ and are continuing to do ‑ so much for cats. Thank you very much to both Steve Dale and the Winn Feline Foundation.”
Since 2005, the Winn Feline Foundation Media Award has recognized journalists and editors who publicly support the mission of the Winn Feline Foundation to advance feline health studies and to communicate facts about feline health. Past recipients of the Winn Feline Foundation Media Award have included Steve Dale, Beth Adelman, Pam Johnson-Bennett, Amy Shojai, Kim Thornton, Kari Winters, and Darlene Arden. In celebration and to further support the efforts of cat health and research, BlogPaws presented a $1,000 donation to Winn Feline at the conference.
