Lea-Ann Germinder, PhD, Fellow PRSA, received the Outstanding Oral Presentation Award at SAVY: the Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Veterinary Medicine at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.  This was Germinder’s first presentation as a PhD scholar. Germinder is also editor and publisher of Goodnewsforpets.com and has extensive experience working with veterinary medicine. The presentation was entitled, “From Guidelines to Practice Communicating Responsible AI in Companion Animal Medicine,” an expanded study of last year’s SAVY poster examining how leading veterinary professionals communicate, understand, and operationalize responsible AI in practice.

The award was sponsored by ANI.ML Health. In a social post commenting about Germinder receiving the award, ANI.ML Health CEO Christopher Pinard, a clinician-scientist, commented, “Congratulations again. Your talk was wonderful and your hacking even better.”

The “Hackathon” Pinard referred to was run by Pinard and the Cornell team, where Germinder and fellow team members developed a prototype app to help veterinary clinics develop responsible AI policies. Commenting on winning the award, Germinder said:

“This award has special meaning to me because I submitted the abstract as a doctoral student and presented it as a new Ph.D. I am thrilled and excited to see how my research can be applied to veterinary medicine, a field I have been honored to participate in so many ways. I’m excited to get this study published and conduct additional studies once funding is secured.”

Germinder will be attending the AVMA conference July 10-14 and several other veterinary conferences in her role at Goodnewsforpets.com. For those interested in learning more about her research, contact her at lgerminder@germinder.com or connect with heron LinkedIn at linkedin.com/in/lgerminder.
