(Boston) July 9, 2015—The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) today awarded George Bishop, DVM, the 2015 AVMA Advocacy Award for his ongoing contributions in advancing the veterinary profession at the state and federal levels.
AVMA President Dr. Ted Cohn presented the award to Bishop during the AVMA House of Delegates Informational Session at the Westin Boston Waterfront.
“Dr. Bishop has worked tirelessly as an advocate for the veterinary profession,” Cohn said. “He was a constant presence in Washington, D.C., while on the AVMAPAC Board and Legislative Advisory Committee, and I am pleased to present him with the 2015 Advocacy Award.”
Bishop was nominated for the AVMA Advocacy Award by the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), where he has a long and distinguished history of supporting organized veterinary medicine. Within the CVMA, Bishop has served in many capacities: as chair of the association’s political action committee (PAC) for six years, as a participant in its legislative committee for more than 15 years, and as a key member of the state association’s Dental Legislative Task Force.
In addition to his involvement within his state veterinary medical association, Bishop has been an active member of the AVMA House of Delegates for 18 years. He served on the AVMAPAC Board for six years and as board chair for three years, where he educated veterinarians on the importance of maintaining a strong PAC so that AVMA’s voice can be heard in the halls of Congress. He also served on the AVMA Legislative Advisory Committee for six years, where he has been instrumental in advancing the association’s legislative portfolio.
Bishop runs a companion animal practice in Carmel, Calif., but when he is not practicing veterinary medicine; he is also actively engaged in community service. He volunteers with youth organizations for the disabled and an education organization for the gifted.
Bishop earned his veterinary degree from the Ohio State University and previously served in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. Throughout his career, he has deservedly received many awards including the: CVMA Distinguished Life Membership Award, Lifetime Achievement Award and the OSU Alumni Recognition Award.
During the AVMA’s Annual Convention in Boston, July 10-14, the AVMA honors some of the nation’s top veterinarians, individuals and organizations during several events and ceremonies. Each recipient is dedicated to improving the lives of both animals and people across the country and around the globe.
These determined recipients represent the very best in all areas of veterinary medicine, from education and public service to research and private practice.
