Veterinary Technician Scholarships Awarded by AKC/Hartz

Veterinary technician scholarships were awarded by The American Kennel Club (AKC®) and The Hartz Mountain Corporation, along with the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). The AKC/Hartz Veterinary Technician Scholarships were awarded to 31 students from 26 U.S. accredited schools of veterinary technology. These awards include six awards of $2,000 each and 25 awards of $1,000 each.

The AKC has awarded annual scholarships to veterinary students since 1991 and last year expanded the program to include the veterinary technician.

“The AKC strives to assist the veterinary profession in providing the best possible care for all dogs,” said Debra Bonnefond, Director of the AKC Veterinary Outreach Program. “We are very pleased to once again offer these scholarships in order to continue our efforts in supporting the hard-working students who will become instrumental in the continuing health of our beloved companion animals.”

“The Hartz Mountain Corporation realizes that often, the veterinarian technician acts as the main line of communication between veterinarians and their patients and clients,” said Dr. Albert H. Ahn, Corporate Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of Hartz. “In recognition and celebration of the important role veterinary technicians play in veterinary practices, laboratories and other institutions across the nation, Hartz is proud to again join AKC as sponsor of Veterinary Outreach.”

“We at NAVTA feel fortunate to have partnered with the American Kennel Club and The Hartz Mountain Corporation for a second year,” said Patrick Navarre, Executive Director, NAVTA. “These two fine organizations clearly recognize the importance of veterinary technicians and the role they play in the veterinary healthcare team.”

To be eligible, candidates must be current, full-time students at an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited Veterinary Technician school and be a NAVTA student member or a member of a NAVTA Student Chapter. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, activities in the small animal, exotics, and research, and activities in NAVTA and SCNAVTA.

Additional information about the scholarships can be found on the AKC Web site as well as the NAVTA Web site.
