Osteoarthritis Newsroom

While arthritis is common in humans, most people do not realize that over eight million pet owners in the United States have dogs suffering from a similar disease called osteoarthritis. It is estimated that one in five dogs has osteoarthritis (OS). The problem is that although our pets may be in pain, they can’t tell their owners where it hurts.

Just like arthritis in humans, arthritis in animals, also known as osteoarthritis, is a painful condition caused by “wear and tear”of cartilage and other parts of the joints characterized by pain, joint swelling and decreased activity. This is similar to whenhumans have osteoarthritis of the knee or hip.

However, there is hope. The appropriate treatment, in most cases, consists of a combination of controlled exercise and physical therapy, proper nutrition, and anti-inflammatory and joint restoration medications. Two recommended medications for osteoarthritis are EtoGesic® and Restor-A-Flex™ created by Fort Dodge Animal Health. EtoGesic controls the inflammation of the joint while Restor-A-Flex provides the nutrients necessary to maintain joint health. These two medications can be used separately or together at the discretion of the veterinarian.
