Dr. Platt currently serves as a Professor of Neurosurgery and Neurology at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, and brings more than 20 years of experience in veterinary medicine, academia, and authorship to Today’s Veterinary Practice and its editorial team.

“It’s an honor to be part of this rapidly evolving journal dedicated to presenting up-to-date practical and relevant information to the veterinary world. My greatest passion in this profession is teaching, so to be able to enable further education through this medium is an exciting challenge for me,” said Dr. Platt.

In his new role as Editor in Chief, Dr. Platt will be responsible for working with the Today’s Veterinary Practice editorial staff and advisory board to ensure the journal’s quality and integrity, to support its mission and vision, and to expand its offerings and outreach through print and online channels.

“Adding Dr. Platt to our publications team further strengthens the clinical expertise of our editorial division and enhances our combined experience and knowledge within the profession,” stated NAVC CEO Thomas M. Bohn, CAE.

In addition to his new position with Today’s Veterinary Practice, Dr. Platt is the author or co-author of more than 190 journal articles and 50 book chapters and the co-editor of three textbooks: BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Neurology, the Manual of Small Animal Neurological Emergencies, and Canine and Feline Epilepsy: Diagnosis and Management. He is a past-president of the ACVIM Neurology specialty and a Founder of the South Eastern Veterinary Neurology Group in the US.

Dr. Platt attended veterinary school at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, interned in small animal medicine and surgery at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph and spent a two-year period in private practice in England. After completing a residency in neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Florida, Dr. Platt spent two years as an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Georgia before returning to the UK where he was Head of the Neurology/Neurosurgery Service at the Animal Health Trust until 2006, after which he returned to the University of Georgia.

Dr. Platt has two teenage daughters who keep him up-to-date on how to use social media, which he is trying hard to master, while also keeping him focused on what is most important on an everyday basis when the going gets tough at work!
