Henry Schein Announces Finalists For Second Annual Henry Schein Cares Medal

Medal Recognizes Excellence in Expanding Access to Care for the Underserved; Nine Finalists Chosen From the Fields of Oral Health, Animal Health, and Medicine

Henry Schein, Inc. today announced the nine finalists for its second annual Henry Schein Cares Medal, an award given annually to nonprofit organizations that demonstrate excellence in expanding access to care for the underserved.

henry schein caresHenry Schein’s commitment to serving society has been a cornerstone of its corporate philosophy since its founding in 1932. Through the Henry Schein Cares global corporate social responsibility program, the company uses its resources to support health care professionals around the world who provide care for those who would otherwise receive little or no medical attention. The Henry Schein Cares Medal honors the people and organizations whose work has been especially effective in bringing care to people and animals in need.

An independent panel of judges selected three finalists among applicants from each of three fields: oral health, animal health, and medicine. In each category, a gold, silver, and bronze medalist will be chosen by the panel of judges, which is made up of experts from the fields of medicine, philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, and business. Winners will be announced later this year at the company’s national sales meeting for each respective business unit. In alphabetical order, the finalists are:

  • Oral health: Community Dental Care (Maplewood, Minnesota), Gaston Family Health Services (Gastonia, North Carolina), and Interfaith Dental Clinic of Nashville (Nashville, Tennessee).
  • Animal health: Animal Care Centers of NYC (New York), First Coast No More Homeless Pets, Inc. (Jacksonville, Florida), and Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Inc. (Yorktown Heights, New York).
  • Medicine: North Country Mission of Hope (Plattsburgh, New York), St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, Ohio), and Volunteers In Medicine Berkshires, Inc. (Great Barrington, Massachusetts).

“Since its founding, our company has been guided by a belief that everyone, regardless of the circumstances of their lives, deserves access to essential health services,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. “These nine finalists have demonstrated that generosity and kindness can have transformative impacts on the health of people and animals in need, and we are very pleased to recognize them with the Henry Schein Cares Medal.”

Each medalist will receive a cash award, in the following amounts: $15,000 for gold, $10,000 for silver, and $5,000 for bronze, through the support of the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Inc. In addition to the cash awards, each finalist will receive $10,000 worth of product from Henry Schein Cares.

To be considered a candidate for this award, applicants must be a nonprofit organization or trust that is tax-exempt under IRS Section 501(c)(3) and that is a public charity (not a private foundation). The applicant should demonstrate that the program has expanded access to health care for the underserved in a novel and innovative way that is measurable and quantifiable. Emphasis is placed on expanding access to health care for children (birth to age 18), although all efforts to expand access to care will be considered, including those involving animal health. Programs also should involve an established multi-disciplinary team that demonstrates the expertise needed for a comprehensive solution to expand access to care. Lastly, programs should demonstrate potential for replication and large-scale impact, and should include a business plan or demonstration of financial sustainability.
