National Veterinary Technician Week begins Monday, October 15, 2000. The event was established by the North American Veterinary Technician Association (NAVTA) Executive Board in 1993 and first celebrated in 1994. The week provides an opportunity to inform the public about the important services provided by these dedicated care givers and to thank those in the profession for the valuable work they do.

Veterinary technicians are an important part of the veterinary health care team; they assist the veterinarian in giving quality care and in ensuring the humane treatment of all animals. Their primary responsibilities in a veterinary practice include animal nursing, administering medications, assisting in surgery, taking radiographs, inducing and monitoring anesthesia, hospital management and laboratory duties. Incorporated in 1981, NAVTA is the national organization devoted exclusively to developing and enhancing the profession of veterinary technology with more than 2,000 members nationwide.

The theme of National Veterinary Technician Week 2000 is “Veterinary Technicians Speak the Language” and focuses on the unique ability veterinary technicians have to communicate with the animals they care for. We encourage you to help spread the word about Veterinary Technicians and their contribution to the health and well-being of our pets.

NAVTA is a nonprofit organization that represents and promotes the profession of Veterinary Technology. NAVTA provides direction, education, support, and coordination for its members, and works with other allied professional organizations for the competent care and humane treatment of animals. NAVTA will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2001. Watch Goodnewsforpets.com for more details on the association’s plans for recognizing this milestone.
