Honoring Three Giants of our Profession

At the DWAA banquet, we introduced a dynamic addition and what we believe will become the most coveted honor in our profession: the DWAA Hall of Fame. The first three honorees ” William F. Stifel, Walter R. Fletcher, and Maxwell Riddle ” we have established an incredibly high standard for future annual inductees. A committee of five will annually determine the recipients of the award, although any DWAA member can make a nomination. DWAA membership is not a requirement for nominated individuals, living or deceased.

William F. Stifel

Stifel served the American Kennel Club from 1957 to 1986, the last nine years as president. He was the founding president of the AKC Museum of the Dog, which opened in 1984; represented the United States’s premier dog registry at the first World Congress of Kennel Clubs in London in 1978; chaired the third World Congress of Kennel Clubs in Philadelphia in 1984. As AKC president, he saw the organization through its 1984 Centennial Dog Show in Philadelphia. In 1983, Stifel oversaw the publication of the centennial volume, “The AKC’s World of the Pure-Bred Dog,” and in 1985. “The American Kennel Club, 1884-1984: A Source Book.”

A member of the Westminster Kennel Club since 1977, one of his biggest contributions to that organization and the sport of dogs was the 2001 publication of the storied club history, “The Dog Show: 125 Years of Westminster.” He is also a longtime member of the Westchester Kennel Club (New York) and is a lifetime member of the Greater St. Louis Training Club. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Stifel has lived in Irvington, N.Y., since 1966. He and Carolyn Graham have been married 48 years and have two daughters and two grandsons.

Walter R. Fletcher

Known to some as the “Duke of Dogdom,” Fletcher was also the dean of dog writers for metropolitan newspapers nationwide while being employed by The New York Times from 1927 to 1976, where he worked as a sportswriter, copy editor, photo editor and makeup editor.

After retiring, he continued to cover dog shows for The New York Times and Dog World magazine, for which he was the East Coast editor from 1977 to 1995. Fletcher was also the author of two books, “Dogs of the World” (Bantam Books, 1977) and “My Times with Dogs” (Howell Book House, 1979).

Throughout his noted career, Fletcher received more than 50 awards, with more than half of those coming from DWAA. In fact, in 1977 he was cited for a “clean sweep,” winning Best Column, Best News Report, Best Feature Story and Best Syndicated Column in the newspaper category. The Gaines Dog Research Center honored him with two coveted Fido statuettes, the canine counterpart to the Oscar. In 1980, he was named Ken-L Ration Dog Writer of the Quarter Century.

He covered dog shows in 14 countries and was a major influence in helping women receive wider acceptance in veterinary schools nationwide, as well as in the upper echelon of the American Kennel Club.

In 1995, after Fletcher announced he would be retiring from dog-show coverage, he was spotlighted at the Westminster Kennel Club show, with the announcer detailing to the large crowd some of Fletcher’s major achievements in the sport. He received a standing ovation, calling it “the most touching moment of my life.” He covered more than 40 Westminster shows in his storied career.

Fletcher was born in New York City in 1906 and died in 2000. He is survived by two sons, Winston, of Niceville, Fla., and Carey, of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Maxwell Riddle

Here’s a guy to whom we owe plenty. The namesake of those coveted Maxwells that contest winners receive did just about everything within our profession, plus served as an international dog judge as well.

His first book, “The Springer Spaniel,” was published in 1939 by Will Judy, owner of Dog World magazine, a publication for which Riddle wrote a monthly column and served as associate editor for more than 50 years. He was The Cleveland Press pet columnist from 1938 to 1969 and also for Columbia Features, 1959 to 1966, He was named DWAA Dog Writer of the Year in 1949, 1961 and 1983. Other honors include Gaines’ Dogdom’s Man of the Year (1961), Dog Journalist of the Year (1971) and induction into Ken-L Ration’s Hall of Fame 1987.

Riddle founded the Ravenna Kennel Club (Ohio), for which he was president and show chairman for more than a half century; he was also a founding member of DWAA, a former president and a member of Scholarship Awards committee.

He was born in 1907 in Ravenna, Ohio, and died in 2002. A daughter, Betsy Whitmore, and son, Henry Warner, III, and wife, Lenora, of Singer Island, Fla., survive him.
