Dr. John Ciribassi was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. Living in an urban area, his interest in animals was fueled by television programs like Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. After working summers at a veterinary hospital, he realized that veterinary medicine offered him the chance to combine his interests in animals and in medicine. After graduating from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984, along with his wife Elise, who is also a veterinarian, he moved to north central Pennsylvania, where he worked with dairy cattle. Four years later, Elise and he moved to the Chicago area and began a small animal practice in Carol Stream, Illinois. It was here that he developed his interest in animal behavior.

In 1998 he began working with Dr. Andrew Luescher of Purdue University to achieve certification as a specialist in animal behavior and became board certified with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in 2006. He now owns and operates a behavior specialty veterinary practice in the Chicago area, and helps run, along with Elise, the Carol Stream Animal Hospital. He has two daughters, Danielle and Rebekah and a constantly purring cat named Abbey.

Dr. Ciribassi was president of the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association in 2000 and president of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior from 2006 to 2008.
