AVMA and Animal Planet Team Up To Produce Informative Television Spots

Schaumburg, IL — The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the premier professional veterinary medical association, has teamed up with Animal Planet, the popular cable television channel reaching more than 77 million homes, to develop a series of 30-second on-air animal healthcare spots.

The spots, hosted by Dr. Kent Vince, a recent graduate from the Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine, offer viewers tips on protecting the health and safety of pets and other animals. The short vignettes spotlight important information on topics such as pet dental health, traveling safely with pets, and foods that are dangerous for pets.

“The television informational pieces are fun and educational,” said Dr. James H. Brandt, AVMA President. “this is a terrific opportunity for AVMA animal health messages to reach the Animal Planet audience,” Dr. Brandt added.

It is anticipated that the joint project will increase the association’s public visibility to the nationwide Animal Planet audience and Animal Planet will, in turn, receive additional exposure through in-hospital materials supporting the vignettes that will be made available to AVMA members later this year. Both the AVMA and Animal Planet will be announcing the relationship on their respective Web sites and through the mail.

For each spot funded by an AVMA-approved sponsor, the AVMA logo will appear at the start of the vignette. These short, targeted vignettes offer corporate sponsors the opportunity to support educational messages on Animal Planet that features AVMA-approved scripts. Vignette production and on-air scheduling will begin as sponsors are secured.

Animal Planet launched in 1996 and offers a wide range of television entertainment from documentaries and dramatic reality-based series to original movies. The network is operated by Discovery Networks, a unit of Discovery Communications, Inc. that operates and manages the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, the Travel Channel and the Discovery Health Channel.
