DALLAS, June 27, 2002 — According to Travel Industry Association of America’s (TIA) Summer 2002 Travelometer, Americans will take more than 233 million person-trips this summer, up two percent over last summer. A person-trip is one person traveling 50+ miles, one-way, away from home. The TIA also says that about 14% of Americans ( 10 million) will take their pets with them. Dogs make up the bulk ( 78%) and the primary mode of travel is by car or truck ( 76%).

- Pack a leash, bowls, towels, food , water and of course your pet’s favorite toys.
- Start your trip by identifying pet friendly hotels and motels. Be a courteous hotel guest by following pet policies and ensuring your animal is not bothersome to other guests or employees.
- Be sure your pet has an up-to-date collar tag with your phone number.
- Utilize an approved pet travel crate…available for dogs and cats. Use a pet restraining device for protection against sudden stops when the animal is not in the travel crate.
- Never leave children or animals unattended in the vehicle.
- Always keep your pet on a leash when you are outside your automobile.
- Keep animals well hydrated with plenty of water.
