Mosquitoes Keep Biting!
But Dr. Rubin Takes Some of the Sting Out of Heartworm Disease
Dr. Sheldon Rubin, AHS secretary-treasurer, will be available to discuss the AHS 2005 Guidelines for the Diagnosis, Prevention and Management of Heartworm Infection in Dogs and the 2005 Guidelines for the Diagnosis, Prevention and Management of Heartworm Infection in Cats at the American Veterinarian Medical Association 2005 Convention.
The 2005 guidelines were released at this year’s ACVIM Forum. They recommend annual testing, retesting when switching products and year-round prevention. Heartworms are parasitic worms spread by mosquitoes that live in the arteries of the lungs and in the right side of the heart in cats and dogs.
A chief of staff of Blum Animal Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Rubin is the recipient of the American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) Practitioner of the Year Award 2003 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association of 2004. He has appeared on television and radio programs, such as Steve Dale’s “Pet Central,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” and Animal Planet Radio and has authored several books for cat and dog owners.
