We strive to have interesting new content as frequently as we can. This month is no exception. Incredibly, the American Humane Association is celebrating its 100th Be Kind to Animals Week. Wow!
Within that context, Dr. Marty Becker’s responses in his special guest interview gave me “paws.” I can’t even count the number of projects, let alone conversations I’ve had with him and others over twenty years to understand veterinary medicine and communicate good information to the pet owner. But I learned even more about him and the possibilities for the next century that we should all consider.
In the interview, Dr. Becker speaks lovingly of his passion for the profession, his daughter Mikkel’s work, and his hopes (and grandfatherly reasoning) for his granddaughter Reagan to join the veterinary profession. He also spoke about his latest project, the Fear Free initiative.
According to Dr. Becker, “I’ve seen three previous transformations. The first was embracing feline medicine (cats aren’t just small dogs). The second was comprehensive dental care and the third was multimodal pain management. Creating Fear Free veterinary visits is the largest and most comprehensive of these, as it’s literally for every pet, every practice, every day.”
In his one wish for success he adds, “I would wish every veterinary healthcare professional took responsibility for every pet’s physical and emotional wellbeing. We must take ownership of the emotional care and compassion for every pet under our care.”
Powerful statements from a passionate leader. Could it lead to a major contribution of a new century of kindness for animals? I hope so. For more information on Fear Free right now visit dvm360.com/fear free.
Fear Free and Goodnewsforpets sponsor Ceva Animal Health adds to the effort with pet owners with Tips for Taking the Stress and Fear Out of Visits to the veterinary clinic. We’ve also reposted a timely Decoding Your Dog chapter interview from Ceva’s veterinary behaviorist Valarie Tynes, DVM, Dipl. ACVB.
Our third of 15 contests to celebrate the 15th Goodnewsforpets Anniversary features “Time for Outdoor Fun” CAMEO-Otic and our special GNFP Interchangeable Silver Charm designed exclusively by Elena Kreigner.
Also in honor of this week’s celebrations, we’ve added a special article about the Siberian Husky Neo, rescued by Dr. AS Narain Naidu and his leg healed by Boneo Canine bone supplement. There’s a special giveaway of Boneo Canine on our Facebook page.
And don’t forget the special interview with Janiss Garza, Cat Writers’ Association member and panelist at the upcoming CWA Writing Panel at BlogPaws. This is a fabulous conference and I will be there. Hope to see many of you as well!
