Even though Texas Health officials in Austin are investigating a dozen possible cases of typhus in Travis County, further north than the disease is usually seen in Texas, there’s good news for pet owners.
Yes, studies have proven that people are infected with typhus from fleas. And in even Texas where according to the Department of State Health Services most of the murine typhus cases occur in South Texas, it can happen in other parts of the state as well. Symptoms can include a headache, fever, nausea, body aches and possibly a rash. The state health department Web site said typhus is easily treated with certain antibiotics.
