Federal Report Shows Pet Foods Can Put People at Risk for Salmonella

A government report revealed that a salmonella outbreak linked to pet food sickened 79 people between 2006 and 2008, with about 50% of the victims under 2 years old. The report’s lead author said the children likely became infected by touching dirty pet food dishes or affected animals, and then putting their hands in their mouths. The report authors offered recommendations to curb risks of salmonella infection at home.
