Dog Writers Association of America Celebrates 70 Years Covering Our Best Friend

Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) will celebrate its 70th year at the Organization’s Annual Awards Banquet, traditionally held the Sunday night before the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The Banquet will be at Southgate Towers Hotel Feb. 13 ” the very date DWAA was founded in 1935.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) will sponsor the Cocktail Reception before the gala Banquet. Ft. Dodge and Purina are co-sponsors of the Banquet. A special menu is being planned for the event, which will feature celebrity presenters, a silent auction of luxury gifts donated by William Secord Galleries, the Southgate, and others, and a drawing for a limited edition print donated by Westminster KC. Proceeds will benefit the DWAA Junior Education Award for students planning to enter dog-related careers.

DWAA members and guests at the Banquet will honor winners of the DWAA Annual Writing Competition. Winners will receive Maxwells ” the Oscars of the dog world ” and Special Awards sponsored by leading dog-related businesses and nonprofit organizations, including AKC Distinguished Service, AKC/CHF, The Iams Company, the ASPCA, Purina, Merial, the World Canine Freestyle Organization, Off Lead, Radio Systems Pet Safe, HSUS, Schering-Plough Animal Health Corp, Eukanuba, Pet Sitters International, the Bob Cole Award for Educational Writing, Fort Dodge and Dog Wise.

DWAA was founded in 1935 when a small group of newspaper and magazine journalists, whose editors occasionally sent them to cover dog shows and events, decided to form a pack. Since then, DWAA has expanded its worldwide membership to more than 500, representing every area of the media.
