2002 Leo K. Bustad Award Newsroom

The power of the human-animal bond is a phenomenon that cannot be denied.

Perhaps no one can speak about the power of the human-animal bond more eloquently than Dr. Marty Becker, a veterinarian who has made it his life’s mission to teach about the healing power and strength of “the Bond.”

Dr. Becker is a veterinarian for today’s pet lovers. He understands that our pets are now integral members of our families and are more likely to share the family bed than sleep in the backyard. Dr. Becker believes that pets share an important part of our lives and our appreciation for them and the richness they bring to our lives should be heralded.

In addition to his work as a veterinarian, Dr. Becker is also a successful author, lecturer, educator and media personality. Now, he is receiving another honor ” one of the highest honors bestowed in veterinary medicine. In recognition of his work to promote the human-animal bond, Dr. Becker will receive the 2002 Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award presented by the American Veterinary Medical Association, Delta Society and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc.

Dr. Becker will be presented the award September 12, 2002 at the Tufts Animal EXPO in Boston, Mass. The presentation ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. during the opening ceremony at Hynes Convention Center.

Among Dr. Becker’s many accomplishments include co-authoring the best selling books, “Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul” and “Chicken Soup for the Cat and Dog Lover’s Soul.” Dr. Becker has lectured on the power of the human-animal bond at every veterinary school in the United States as well as in dozens of countries, and at the Smithsonian Institution. He is a passionate promoter of the Bond in all that he does.
